Juicy and flavorful Ikea's Swedish meatballs smothered in a savory - cream gravy, and taste just like the original.

If you're a fan of Ikea's Swedish Meatballs, you're not alone! Anytime I visit Ikea, I make sure to stop by their cafeteria for a plate of those delicious meatballs. If you share my love, you're in luck because I have a recipe to share. During the Covid-Pandemic, Ikea made their Swedish meatballs recipe public, and I have been making it ever since.
I stayed true to the original recipe by using a combination of ground pork and ground beef for the meatballs, but I took it up a notch by adding a few extra ingredients and seasonings. A hint of allspice and nutmeg for a subtle aroma and a touch of sweetness, while the white pepper adds earthy heat. For the gravy, I added a splash of soy sauce to deepen the flavor, and Dijon mustard to give it a unique taste that balances the richness of the cream and beef broth.
I like to serve my Swedish meatballs over creamy mashed potatoes and peas, but their also delicious over egg noodles, you favorite pasta, or ice. While Ikea serves their Swedish meatballs with a side of Lingonberry fruit spread, which can be hard to find unless you visit the store, I have found that whole cranberry sauce makes a nice alternative. If you like Swedish meatballs, I hope you'll give this recipe a try.
HOW TO MAKE IKEAS SWEDISH MEATBALLS
MIX THE MEATBALLS: In a large bowl, add the ground beef, pork, egg, garlic, onion, and spices. Using your hands, mix the meat until well combined (try not to over-mix the meat or the meatballs will be tough).
FORM THE MEATBALLS: Using a 1-inch cookie scoop, shape the meatballs into equal size balls, place on a plate and refrigerate for 1-2 hours (this helps the meatballs hold their shape while cooking.
BROWN THE MEATBALLS: Preheat a large skillet over medium-high heat with 1/2 tablespoon of light olive oil and 1/2 tablespoon of butter. Add half of the meatballs and brown on all sides about 3 minutes. Remove onto a plate, and brown the remainder of the meatballs. To help the meatballs keep their shape, lift up the skillet and shake it from side to side.
MAKE THE GRAVY: Drain off any excess grease from the skillet. Add 3 tablespoons butter to the same skillet that you fried the meatballs in.
Once the butter is melted, add the flour to make a roux, and stir using a whisk until well combined.
Cook the mixture for 1 minute
Slowly whisk the beef broth into the flour mixture, then whisk in the cream. Add the Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, Dijon mustard and mix to combine. Heat the mixture until hot and bubbly. If the mixture gets too thick you can thin it out with a bit of water or additional broth.
