Review of Cooking Light's September 09 Issue + One Issue to Giveaway.

This week has been a crazy week, so I apologize for not posting a recipe since last Friday. I have had some wonderful unexpected company at my house. My Mother in Law came to stay with us for a week and we have had a really great time. All I have been doing is cooking up a storm and spoiling her. I will be adding a new recipe tonight or tomorrow, but until then I wanted to make a post about a review. I was recently contacted by the wonderful folks at Cooking Light Magazine. They asked me If I would review their brand new September Issue. How could I pass up a chance to add a little of my own input.

September is a big month for Cooking Light, it marks a major redesign of their magazine. How exciting is that! Cooking Light has a fresh new look which enhances the magazine’s readability and relevance. It also highlights the brand’s unique point of view, Healthy eating does taste great! Cooking Light shows Americans how to prepare healthy low fat meals at home without forfeiting flavor. That part really got me excited. You see I was always under the impression that if you cook healthy then you usually have to give up on taste. I wasn't ready to give up great tasting food for being healthy. I know that sounds awful but I just assumed healthy eating and cooking healthy would more than likely taste bad. Well I could not of been more wrong.

I settled in and took a couple days to read over their magazine. To start off the cover is beautiful, before opening up the magazine a lot of items listed on the cover really caught my eye. Budget cooking, super fast meals and comfort foods lightened up now that really got my attention. Oh how I love my comfort food. I thought to myself can comfort food taste good and be healthy all at the same time? I couldn't wait to find out. All the article titles were very catchy so that was a plus for me. I did notice another thing each and every recipe in the magazine had a picture. We all know as Food Bloggers just how important it is to see what a particular dish actually looks likes , so I thought adding pictures to each recipe was a awesome idea on their part.

I scanned through the budget cooking section and immediately thought to myself I bet the recipes choices are not going to be good. Wrong again..... Pan Fried Pork Chops with Homemade Applesauce, Meatloaf and Chicken and Dumplings now were talking this is my kind of food, plus the dishes could be made for less than $10 who doesn't love that! I looked through the ingredients and they were actually pretty good, just a bit more healthy. This healthy stuff is really starting to appeal to me LOL. I think I am going to start by trying out one of their dishes in the magazine. Either the Creole Shrimp and Sausage Stew or the Chocolate Chip Canoli's, heck maybe even both of them. Thank you Cooking Light for for changing my mind on healthy eating. It is so nice to know that cooking healthy doesn't mean I have to give up on great tasting food.

That cover does look nice! I would like to use healthier recipes when I am cooking.
It does sound appealing. I think we can cook good food lightly with lots of flavor if we just pay attention to seasoning our food. Thanks for doing the give away!

Hmmm...interesting! I would've been surprised about the meatloaf and chicken & dumplings too. I could definitely use a healthy food makeover - but I'm not willing to sacrifice taste either. So I'm willing to give it a shot. :)

I was always a bit skeptical of Cooking Light too but I took the plunge and am usually very satisfied with the results. I'm to the point now where I try to convert most of the Southern Living recipes into lighter versions. I'm glad you found a healthy source of inspiration!

I love cooking light! I just grabbed their 101 Best Chicken a few weeks ago and LOVE IT! I totally want more of their stuff. And what I love the best, so far, is that I can cook almost every meal in there under an hour...sometimes even 30 minutes. Love, Love, Love it! michelle.moby@gmail.com

For sevral years I received cooking light each month but after two or three years it seemed as if the recipes were starting to repeat themselves so I stopped. Though I drooled over all the photos I didn't make much out of them as the ingredient list was usually a mile long and some of which I knew nothing about. I'll have to give it a look-see.
