Skillet Fried Cinnamon Apples

Sliced apples that are cooked in a cast iron skillet with butter, vanilla, cinnamon and sugar. Southern Fried Apples are a simple, down home side dish that pair perfectly with any country meal or breakfast. 
Skillet Fried Apples are a simple southern staple that compliment just about any southern meal or alongside a big breakfast. These apples are just like the fried apples you will find at Cracker Barrel, but better! Skillet Fried Cinnamon Apples are one of my family's favorite side dishes and they're simple to make in about 15 minutes. 

We like to serve them as a dessert, alongside breakfast or as a side to any country meal. Fried apples are a lot like apple pie without the crust. Frying apples are very simple! Just heat up a cast iron skillet, melt the butter, saute the apples and then add cinnamon, brown, white sugar and vanilla to make delicious cinnamon coated apples. 

I like to use a cast iron skillet because the apples spread out in a pretty even layer. Plus a cast iron skillet can heat up quickly and evenly and retain that heat for a long time, so the apples cook up in about 10-15 minutes.


I like to peel my apples, but you can leave the peels on for more of a rustic dish. Fried apples are also a wonderful dish to make when you have apples hanging around in your produce basket that need to be used before they go bad. 

These yummy apples are delicious served alongside chicken, pork, ham or pot roast.  They also pair nicely with a  big country breakfast, used as a topping for pancakes or served as a dessert with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Any way you serve these fried apples you can't go wrong. Now lets get right to the recipe. 




Skillet Fried Cinnamon Apples 

Ingredients: 
4 - tablespoons butter
5 - 6 Granny Smith or Golden Delicious apples peeled, cored and sliced semi - thick 
splash of fresh lemon juice 
1/4 - cup light brown sugar
1/4 - cup granulated sugar
2 - teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 - tablespoons cornstarch
1/4 - cup water
1/2 - teaspoon vanilla

Directions: 
In a large. medium size cast iron skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced apples and splash with a bit of lemon juice, Saute the apples for about 2-3 minutes. 

In a small bowl, blend together both sugars, cinnamon and cornstarch. Sprinkle over the apples and stir to combine, making sure all the apples are fully coated. Add the water and the vanilla, stir to combine.

Lower the heat to med-low and continue to saute and simmer the apples for an additional 
10 - 12 minutes. or until the cinnamon syrup has thickened and the apples are fork tender.  

Remove from heat and serve warm. 

recipe yields: about 2-3 cups

OH WOW! apples look Delicious. I bet adding a little maple syrup in place of the vanilla would also be good added to the mixture.
I bet this warm apple mixture would be wonderful on top of a Texas waffle.

About how much does this make; a couple of cups?

I would say about 2-3 cups after it all cooks down. And yum on the waffles.
