Pecan Chewies - Southern Pecan Cookie Bars

Pecan Chewies are a traditional southern cookie bar filled with butter, brown sugar and pecans. These cookie bars are chewy on the inside and crispy on the outside.
Today I want to share a yummy cookie bar recipe with y'all! Maybe you have seen them or maybe you haven't. All I can say is you've got to make them. I found these Pecan Chewies a couple months back on Southern Bite. Then they popped up again on another blog with great reviews from both, so I knew I had to bake them.

These Pecan Chewies are sort of a cross between a Butterscotch cookie bar and a shortbread cookie, but filled with pecans! The edges are crispy and the middle is soft and chewy just like the name. I can bet that you probably have all the ingredients right in your pantry.

I have already made these cookies twice since posting this recipe, because they are that good. I plan on baking up another batch to take up to our families next week for  the Thanksgiving holiday. I hope you'll give this recipe a try.

Pecan Chewies - Southern Pecan Cookie Bars

Pecan Chewies are a traditional southern cookie bar filled with butter, brown sugar and pecans. These cookie bars are chewy on the inside and crispy on the outside.
Prep time: 15 MinCook time: 45 MinTotal time: 1 Hour

  • 2 sticks butter, melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 2 cups self-rising flour (do not substitute)
  • 1 cup pecans pieces
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  1. Preheat the oven to 300 degrees. Melt butter, add sugars, and blend well by hand.
  2. Add beaten eggs, stir well.
  3. Add flour and stir until all lumps are gone. Add pecans and vanilla.
  4. Pour into a greased and floured 9 x 13 baking dish.
  5. Bake approximately 40 to 50 minutes watch closely so they don't over cook.
  6. You want them to retain their chewiness.

If you do not have any self rising flour on hand you can make your own.

For each cup of all-purpose flour, add 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Mix to combine and continue with recipe.

These sound really delish to me. My husband would want mini chocolate chips sprinkled into the mix..... I guess that would be an ok addition. Gotta make some of these soon.

I made 2 batches of the pecan pie bars and although they are very good, I was a little disappointed that the middle of the bars were not like pecan pie. I did everything exactly like the recipe called for and baked them for 45 min. and can't understand what I did wrong. They are definitely very good though. Just would liked for the middle to have been a bit soft like a pecan pie.

They are not soft like pecan pie. I had noted that they taste like pecan pie to me. They are a chewy and crispy bar not soft in the middle.
These look and sound delicious!!! I can't wait to make these!

Delicious! I often try to make over recipes like this so they're a little easier for our toddler, who is oh-so-sensitive to sugar. As in she has a meltdown without about one minute of eating a lot! Anyway, I'm going to try these. Thanks so much and if you're keen on a newly made-over recipe from Paula Dean, I just made a batch of mini pumpkin spice muffins...Totally kid approved. Happy holidays!

I grew up eating chewies as a child. My family is from John's Island SC and this was made often down there. This is low country cooking.

Can I use margarine? Or does it have to be butter? That's the only ingredient I don't have.
Tina Butler said…
Margarine will not give you the same results as real butter. The bars will be dry and crumbly with margarine.

My husband loves pecan pie and I love blondies with nuts so these look like a perfect marriage. Making pecan chewies for the Superbowl tonight. Thanks for the recipe!

Love this recipe! I followed everything word for word and it came out great. My family loves this recipe!

I made them last night. The bars are delicious, but I don't know if 2 sticks of butter is to much butter, because they came out to grease. My family love the taste.
