Better Homes & Gardens Scented
Wax Warmer {Review}

I'm not a Scentsy user only because they're not that affordable for me. If you knew me than you would understand. I'm pretty much a tightwad so anything that cost a great deal usually doesn't get purchased. I always tell people I'm so tight that I squeak when I walk LOL. I can't help it that is just how I have always been.

I usually use regular jar candles from Kirkland's or my old school tart warmer. Really it's mostly out of habit, but I have to admit constantly replacing those tea lights can be nerve racking.

I have always wanted a Scentsy, but I just couldn't justify spending $30 for a warmer and having to order them through someone versus jut buying everything at the store. I am one of those people that has to smell the scents of the candles before I actually buy them.

As part of the Walmart Mom's program I was asked to sample the new Scented Wax Warmer Systems from Better Homes and Gardens. I was so excited because finally there was a scented warmer system that even I could afford. As soon as my box arrived I ripped it open. I was so excited because the choice of warmers that were chosen could not of been more perfect. I received an Everyday Expressions Warmer pictured above.

As well as a Pumpkin Warmer from their Fall/Harvest Collection. I really didn't know too much about these warmers, but I was excited that I no longer needed a flame to melt the wax. Yay!!! Instead there is a 25W light bulb that gives off a soft glow while acting as a safe heat source for the scented wax cubes.

Finally a safer and more stylish wax warming system. I always worried about the flame from the tart burners especially with little ones around. All of the warmers are easy to use. Place the tray on the warmer and add fragrance cubes and turn on the switch. As the tray heats, wax will melt and fragrance will release within minutes. Before I knew it my living room smelled like I was baking cookies.

What I really liked about these warmers is that you can remove the wax and pour it back into the storage trays. Then just wipe it clean with a paper towel and add a new scent. This is so much easier than placing my whole tart warmer in the freezer and then popping out the tart candle.

I received 4 different fragrance cube sets. Blueberry Muffin, Spiced Pumpkin Pie, Wild Berry Cheesecake and Sugared Vanilla Shortbread. The baking and fruit scented candles have always been a favorite of mine, so the wax cube choices were perfectly suited for me.

If you aren't into the food and fruity scents no worries because the Better Homes and Gardens Scented Wax Cubes come in 24 different Everyday Scents. (Line dried Linen, Country Sunflower, Shimmering Cherry Blossom, Lemongrass, Warm Crackling Fireplace and Fresh Ocean Flowers) just to name a few. BHG also has 14 additional Harvest scents. The wax cube packages come in a package of 6 for $2 each which is really reasonable.

Helpful Tips:
  • Always store the fragrance wax cubes in a cool dry place.
  • Turn your warmer on for 1 hour in the morning and one hour in the evening to fill your home with you favorite scent. The fragrance will linger most of the day and conserve the scent in the wax so it lasts longer. I noticed the next morning that I could still smell the fragrance and my warmer had been off all night.
  • Be careful not to overfill your warmer (2 cubes is usually sufficient).
  • You can also mix fragrance cubes together to customize your own scent.

My Thoughts:

Since I am not a Scentsy user I can't compare scent wise, but I can tell you that I am very impressed with the BHG Wax Warmers System. The price of the BHG warmers is $15 versus $30 for Scentsy this is more realistic and affordable for me. I can also purchase the wax fragrance cubes in store instead of ordering them. Each package is priced at $2 versus $5.

The whole system is so affordable that I think I will be purchasing a few for Christmas gifts this year. You can find the Better Homes and Gardens Scented Wax Warmers and the Fragrance Cubes at your local Walmart in the "Candle & Home Department.

For more information you can visit their Facebook page or online at the ScentSational Website.

I've been meaning to go get one of these myself! A couple of my friends who taught down the hall from me last year used them in their classrooms, and everyone always commented either how good it smelled or wondered who was baking blueberry muffins from down the hall! :)

I have a scentsy from doing a party for a friend and I think the Better Homes, are much more fragrant and last longer! I am in love with the Pumpkin Spice scent! Now I can get another warmer for our upstairs!

I love mine. Been using it everyday.. and I feel safe even if my 4yr old daughter turns it on by herself. She remembers it more than me. Love the scents! A lot to choose from.

Well, so glad this was on your blog. I'm on my way today to find a set. With four big poodles and a mini in my house it can get kinda woofy at times :)

I tried the Better Homes & Gardens warmer & tarts also because of the high cost of scentsy and I love it !! When I want to change scents & after I turn off my warmer & the tarts are solid, I just take a little knife and kind of slice it then it pops right out & I save it for another time ! I think it's a lot easier & doesn't make a mess like pouring the melted wax could be !!
I can't wait to try the Christmas scents !!

I have a Scentsy that I received as a gift. I have switched over to the BHG tarts. I am one who likes to smell the scent before purchase too and I only found 1 of the Scentsy "flavors" that I liked. I have found at least 3 of the BHG scents that I love. I can't wait for Christmas scents, either. I like my Scentsy but I love the pumpkin warmer you got!!

Hi everyone I am loving my new warmers. I have to agree the pumpkin one is so cute. BHG also has a acorn, apple, gourd leaf and more harvest warmers to choose from. The Expressions everyday warmer fits my decor perfectly so I was syked when I got that one.

I am sure Scentsy is good, but this is just more afforadable me. I like being able to purchase in store as well. Smelling the candles first is a must for me.

I think the BH&G warmers are cute, but the scents are terribly fake smelling to me. I love the real smells and the selection of smells with Scentsy better. Is the BH&G wax food grade?
I use both of them. I love them both and think they are equally just as good! I, like you can't justify spending the money on the scentsy when I can get them at Walmart for cheaper and just as good!
Tina Butler said…
I think it is up to each individual. I don't think the BHG Fragrance Cubes smell fake at all. I actually thought they smelled pretty close to the real thing.

I like being able to have an option not just something you have to order from a consultant. I can't tell what the scents smell like.

$5 a package is just a bit steep for me for the wax cubes, but it might not for others.

I have two warmers I bought one August and hubby got me one for my birthday. I love them. I also love the yummy scents. I use 1 wax cube at a time though.

I have been trying to decide which type of warmer/wax to use. Thank you for this great review! I plan to try this! Shush, don't tell my cousin who sells Scentsy! lol

I saw those the other day while at Walmart. I love yummy smelling candles. I think I will have to go get one now. Thanks for the good review.

I've been using the BHG cubes for over a year now, they have been around awhile but Walmart moves them around constantly. I love my bulb warmer, but I have a tin primitive warmer with punch holes that glows around the room. I'm curious how easy it is to get the wax out of the ceramic with the knob in the center. I pop my tart holder cup in to the freezer for a few minutes then it will slide right out but the one with a knob would make it hard.

Oh, oh OH!!!! I'm adding this to my Christmas list. I really wanted a Scentsy warmer, but I also like to smell them first. So I think I'll go check out some of their scents soon and put some on a list. Great!!!
I have the brown one in the second picture. I acutally bought it this summer for VBS because I didn't want to have a candle near the kids.

Anyway, I LOVE it!!! It is so much nicer to just turn it on and not worry about having tea lights on hand.

I so like to use my yankee candle tarts in it. I do have some of the BHG wax cubes and they work well and smell good too.
Tina Butler said…
Nicole you just have to pour the wax out and back into the trays. Then just wipe it clean with a paper towel and add a new scent.

I think that is what I love most about it because I used to have to pop my whole tart burner in the freezer to get the wax out.

I have several tart burner including one that plugs in that I got from some party my daughter had (For Your Home I think, or something like that). I tend to use my tart burners more around the holidays and in the fall than any other time. I've always used Yankee tarts (Harvest is my favorite!)but they've gotten a little pricey and like you I'm a tightwad! Thanks for the review on these from Walmart! Now I have a lower cost alternative. I'm heading to Walmart this weekend and will definitely have to add The BHG wax cubes to my list!

I had to try this after reading your post & bought the Cinnamon scent. It is very fragrant & not fake smelling at all. My local Wal-Mart only had 1 package of it so hopefully they will get more stocked soon. Anxious to try some of the other scents now. Thanks for your review!

That is great Jill. I hope they get more scents in the store as well. I know you can order them online in a (4)pack at walmart.com and have them shipped site to store for free. The package is $8.97 http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=15689212

The BHG cubes have a little higher melting point than the Scentsy wax, so it just stays "mushy" in a Scentsy warmer. I also find the cube lasts 1-2 days as opposed to my Scentsy cubes, which last about a week each - one $5 bar will last a whole month, while I go through a $2 BHG bar in a week - making the Scentsy price cheaper. The Scentsy also has a lifetime warranty and you can buy extra dish tops if one breaks. They're also a little heavier. That's my experience-comparison. Oh, and your local consultant should have testers for you to sample-smell before buying.

In fact, I loved the Scentsy so much better, that I became a consultant! A great way to earn a few hundred dollars a month part-time!!

I also am not comfortable with the Scentsy prices.I'm sure they work great, but I don't like the inconvenience of scheduling to smell so I can purchase. I purchased my BHG warmer and 3 scents a few days ago. I love it so far. My mom has owned two for about a year now and her house always smells wonderful. I have to be honest and say that I really love candles, and one of the main reasons I purchased a warmer was also to use with ALL the wax I have left in the bottom of several candles. Its not as strong as the cubes though. I also purchased a couple of oils to add to my waxes. My only complaint with BHG is that I want more variety of scents. Michael's also sells wax tarts, so I'll be going there soon to purchase a few.

Hi--just wanted to mention that I have a Scentsy warmer and I use BHG wax cubes (b/c they are cheaper) and the BHG cubes DO melt completely in my Scentsy warmer.

I have purchased two of these warmers and I love them. I use the wax and the oil from Bath and Body works.
My first burner was knocked over and broken beyond repair, so I purchased another one. This time my son picked up the plate and when he relized it was hot, he dropped it and broke it.
Is there a place or website where I can purchase just the plate?

Does any body know where I can get the replacement light bulbs for the plug in warmer? I have looked every where, and also ran into a woman at Wal-Mart tht had been looking, with no success.

Im not saying that these tarts are not cheaper, but the feel of the product verus a Scentsy product. You can tell quality in Scentsy. It lasts for days (3 to 4) I've tried both and even homemade tarts. My consulatant has a stock at her home and sends me reminders when new scents comes in plus, they have 10% sales, buy 5 get 1 free and my consulatant gives me free replacement bulbs when needed. I think it's preference though.

Thanks for the wonderful review! I also LOVE my BHG warmer. I have a Scentsy warmer, which I also like, it's just much more convenient to be able to go to Walmart & smell all the wonderful scents to choose what I want, not to mention the more economical prices! I LOVE the variety of scents you can get and have found lots of favorites.

I have broken the lid to one of my BHG warmers. Does anyone know how I can order a replacement?

Hi, I just bought a warmer...can I leave it on 24/7? I bought the BHG at Walmart
Tina Butler said…
About leaving the warmer on 24/7 - You would need to read the instructions that came with your BHG Warmer.
Anonymous said…
I have a couple scentsy burners and I leave them on sometimes for a few days at a time. A friend has the plug ins in her bathrooms and they serve as nightlights as well. She leaves them on all the time and changes the wax once a week.

We recently received a scenty as a gift and loved it! The only bad thing is the wax cubes gets a little pricey. We went to our local Wal Mart and noticed they were also selling BHG Warner's and wax cubes. I'm not a big fan of the warmer so I will stick my scenty warmer but we purchased a couple packs of BHG wax cubes ( sugared melon kiwi and wild berry cheesecake ) and they smelled wonderful! So instead of paying 5$ for scenty cubes I'd rather pay 2$ and it smell just as good. And also I had no problem with them melting, they melted into liquid very quick!!!!!

I love my tart warmers. I have the BH&G plug-in night light type. I often change up on how I use it. BH&G makes potpourri, wax cubes, candles, & oils. Sometimes I buy the BH&G wax cubes and warm them in the warmer. Sometimes I buy the BH&G potpourri and warm them in the warmer. Sometimes I add the BH&G potpourri to the tart wax after it has lost most of its scent to extend it until the wax is gone.

On a cheap note:
When you buy BH&G cubes you get 12.5 ozs for $2, so $20 gets me 10 packages which is 125 ozs (7.81 lbs). One time I bought a 160 oz (10 lb) block of tart wax that only costs $21, cut off a small piece and added it to warmer with some BH&G oil. When you do it this way you control the scent concentration. I gained 35 ozs of wax (about 17 extra cubes = $6) for $1 more using this method but always had a mess to clean after cutting the wax. So was it worth it? Not if I wanted to melt it down into tart clamshell and still clean up afterwards.

I love the BHG wax cubes. I've never used Scentsy, because I don't know any consultants, but I have used Gold Canyon scent pods.

The Gold Canyon pod warmer works very well with BHG wax cubes. I use the ceramic dish that GC sells to use with their fragrance oils to melt the cubes (I also used a recycled tuna can before I got the ceramic dish, and it worked just fine). I really like this warmer because it has a timer. It WAS more expensive, but being able to turn it on and forget about it is worth it to me.

I like using the BHG baked-good scents in the fall and winter, but I do switch back to Gold Canyon scent pods in the summer, when I like to use more citrus-y aromas. I just don't think that the BHG citrus scents are as fresh as GC.

I have the Better Homes and Garden warmer and love it.
Everyone who comes in my house mentions how good it smells. At $2. for six cubes is affordable and I only use one cube at a time :)
I actually bought one for a present for my neighbors who always mention how good it does in my house.
Unfortunately they accidently broke the top lid and I'm having trouble finding the lid for their particular jug :(
Any suggestions anyone?

Hi! My sweet little daughter accidentally broke the wax saucer on my BH&G warmer, too. After searching the web, and checking at Wal-Mart, I was surprised that I could not find a replacement. I did see on the Sentsy website that you can purchase replacement saucers, but they were just as much as buying a brand new warmer by another brand. I decided to buy a plant dish to use as a replacement. It only cost $.78! Fortunately, the terracotta color blends fine with my warmer. So far, I have had great success with this option. It doesn't fit quite as snug into the warmer as I would like, but it's fine for now. Also, I did see replacement bulbs at my local Wal-Mart. I hope this helps!
I bought a BHG warmer and watched the wax melt...along with the paint that the wax reservoir was sitting in! For fear of it setting on fire, I stopped using it. The workmanship was shoddy and just plain cheap. You get what you pay for. I invested in a Scentsy warmer and the difference in durability of product is night and day (again, you get what you pay for).

As far as availability of scents, I found a consultant in my area who brings over fragrances the very same day I feel like I'm in the mood to sniff and perhaps buy some new ones. Having a consultant is HARDLY inconvenient and she leaves the testers with me until I'm done with them. She picks them up and then I can place an order with her or go online and do it myself. No pressure. She usually leaves me a couple of cubes of samples to try of the new scent of the month.

With BGH having about 40 +/- scents, Scentsy has about 80, and my nose is very particular. The Scentsy rep hands out bulbs for free if mine ever burned out (hasn't yet), and product is delivered to my DOOR. When Walmart can top all of this, I'll consider going back to BHG products.

I have had my same BH & G Wax warmer for going on 3 years and have never had that problem. Sounds like you might of purchased a defective one. I also have a mini night light version and have never had the problem you addressed. It sounds random. You can also order scents and the warmer itself online and have it delivered to your home or do free site to store pick up. Some people prefer not to have sales consultants coming into their home, so it is really your own personal preference. Scentsy isn't for everyone just like Better Homes & Gardens isn't either.
Anonymous said…
Sounds like "wistful" is a scentsy consultant to me. They're always bashing other products with crazy stories of defectivness, blah blah blah. I have two plugin type bgh warmers and LOVE them! Waaaay more economical than scentsy and convenient for me. Very happy customer!

I have a scentsy and a BH&G. They honestly work the exact same! I used to only get scentsy wax because they lasted longer but BH&G has gotten better than scentsy! I also get the fragrance oils and add to the wax which gives it a longer lasting scent. Scentsy reps will try and tell you that other brands do not compare to them...but the proof is in the reviews! I also bought some wax from my local farmers market and I kid you not...BEST WAX EVER! The scent is still strong in my BH &G warmer...now 2 months later...I will be ordering from them again!

Does anyone know where I can find replacement bulbs for the smaller BH&G night light size? I saw replacement bulbs at Walmart for the SentScational brand...but they are too big for the night light size. I've been looking and looking. I too can't afford the Scentsy brand which is why I bought this one. Now I feel discouraged and like I've wasted my money...on the warmer and replacement bulbs that don't fit:(

I've had these warmers for a few years now. LOVE THEM! I have a bunch all over the house since they are also pretty and seasonal. I change them for the seasons. I had a friend give me a Scentsy one with melts for Christmas last year. I think she was surprised I had so many from Wal Mart and didn't know you could get them there. She sells Scentsy. I liked the one she gave me but it is no different then the ones I got at Wal Mart and the scents are the same quality. So since I've had both I can compare and say the ones from Wal Mart are a better deal financially. :) Love them and will use them forever! My favorite scents are the ones you can get to smell like the season. Tree for Christmas, pumpking for Halloween and thanksgiving and Cinnamon spice for Valentines. Then the seasonal ones for spring and summer etc. Some are stronger then others so if you are not sure use one cube and if you like it use another in the larger warmers. :)
