Crock Pot Salisbury Steak

Tonight I'm making our favorite Salisbury Steak & Gravy. Its a whopping 102 degrees here in North Texas, but that's the usual for this time of year. I will be making this recipe in the crock pot so I don't have to crank up the oven. In the summer and winter months my crock pot is my best friend.

This recipe doesn't take all day to cook like most crock pot meals. You will be preparing half of this recipe on the stove top and then let the crock pot do the rest. This dish is so simple to and made with pantry staple ingredients. I serve my Salisbury Steak with Mashed Potatoes or Pasta, but its also good with rice.

Mix the first 5 ingredients together you can use crack crumbs or bread crumbs.

shape into ovals about ¾ inches thick and place in skillet with just a little bit of oil.

Sear the patties in a skillet until brown.

Add onion mushroom and beef broth heat to boiling. Reduce heat cover and simmer for 10 minutes. I did not add mushrooms this time because my husband asked if i could leave them out the next time I made this dish :( Bummer!!

Remove patties to a casserole dish or plate and keep warm.Mix gravy packet according to packet directions. (1 cup water added to gravy mix)

Heat mixture until boiling. Mix water and cornstarch together to make a paste. Add to boiling mixture. Use a wire whisk and whisk until gravy begins to thicken. Make sure to watch your pan, because the cornstarch will thicken rather quickly you don't want lumps of cornstarch. My kiddos had a tug of war with my whisk and it broke so i am using a large fork.

add the prepared gravy mixture. The original recipe i got years and years ago did not call for any extra gravy. I found after the first time i prepared the recipe the it just wasn't hearty enough for me so i add the additional gravy mix and the flavor is perfect.

Using the wire whisk again whisk the gravy until it is smooth and thickened. It really comes off with a hearty brown color by adding the additional gravy.

add the Salisbury steak patties to your crock pot and pour the gravy over the patties. Cover and cook on low for 3 hours.

There you go. This recipe is so good I have been making my Salisbury Steak this way for years.

Salisbury Steak & Gravy

1 pound Lean Ground Beef
1/3 Cup Bread Crumbs or Cracker Crumbs
½ tsp Salt
¼ tsp Pepper
1 egg
1 - small Onion Sliced (I use half)
1 Can Condensed Beef Broth
1 – 4oz Can Sliced Mushrooms, drained
2 T. Cornstarch
2 T Water
1 - Packet Brown Gravy Mix or 1 - Jar/Can Brown Gravy

Mix First 5 ingredients together and shape into ovals about ¾ inches thick.

Cook patties in a skillet turning once until brown. Add onion mushroom and beef broth heat to boiling.

Reduce heat cover and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove patties to a casserole dish and keep warm. Heat mixture until boiling. Mix water and cornstarch together to make a paste.

Add to boiling mixture with a wire whisk and whisk until gravy begins to thicken. I don’t think the gravy is hearty enough for me so I also add 1 packet of brown or mushroom gravy prepared according to package directions and add to the beef broth gravy.

Pour the gravy over the patties in the casserole dish and bake at 350 until bubbly. If preparing this in the crock pot just add the browned patties to the crockpot. Prepare gravy accordingly and pour on top.

Cover and cook for 3 hours on low. Serve with rice, mashed potatoes or noodles.

That looks really good! Unfortunately it's too late in the evening for me to do a crock pot dinner (it wouldn't be done until the kids' bedtime!), but I think I'll try this some day when I'm planning ahead better!

Ya know... I never think to take out my crockpot in the summer. I don't know why, but it always seems like a good thing to use in the winter months. I should lug it off the shelf and make something easy. I do love salisbury steak though I've never actually made it myself! Great step-by-step!

My husband said this is his new favorite meal! I called my mother to tell her about them and she is picking up the ingredients on her way home! My sister in law is making them tomorrow! This has taken the family by storm! EVERYONE LOVED THEM!

It is a rare thing when I find a new dish that pleases everyone but I can tell you right now that this is a new family favorite which has instantly made it into our permanent recipe file!!! I will be making these OFTEN!

I cannot thank you enough for posting it! Oh, also want to add that it is a very economical meal and one that can be made easily enough with kids barking at your heels the whole time! This is definitely Mommy Friendly!!!

I am so thrilled you liked the hoe cake as much as we do! Your post flattered me, had my blushing, and GRINNING from ear to ear! That was the first time I had seen someone else's pics of a recipe I had posted!!! I'm still gushing!!!!
Love ya, Tina!!!

My husband took the leftovers to work today and called me from the break room wanting to know when I was going to post this recipe! He said folks were coming in to see what the smell was and talking to him all about it! I have been trying to get him to tell folks about my cooking website for AGES and when he finally strikes up a conversation, its about your recipe! LOL I just sent out a big old email giving them all the link!
Thanks again!

Tina, I was looking for something different for dinner tonight, so that is what is in the crockpot :-) I am not a great cook at all so the step by step helped. I didn't have cornstarch like I thought so I had to use flour and water, so we will see what it tastes like later.

Terry emailed me this comment so I wanted to be sure and post it. Thanks Terry.

I just had to drop you a line and let you know how much we loved the Salisbury steak recipe. We have tasted the error of our ways, and will never buy the frozen stuff again. This recipe was so easy to put together, I actually doubted if it would taste anything like a Salisbury steak. Oh my......it was the best!!Thanks so much for sharing and I'll be back for more of your tasty recipes. Regards,Terry

looks like southernplate has totally removed her delicious (and always elusive) hoe cake recipe : (

and i don't eat much meat, but after all these reviews i must admit i am tempted to give this recipe a whirl. it's just me eating, but freezing singly for colder weather meals sounds good.

thanks for digging deep into your recipe box and sharing!

I have been searching for a good Salisbury Steak recipe for years. I tried recipes that used onion soup mix, it was terrible. Now every time I see onion soup mix in a recipe I run for the hills, the only thing onion soup mix is good for is soup and French Onion dip. I've tried many different recipes even ones with exotic ingredients like, shiitake mushrooms, veal stock, and even one that used a tablespoon tequila. Look I just want a good ol` Salisbury Steak recipe! Finally my search is over; this Salisbury Steak recipe is a gift from God. It is exactly what I was looking for, thank you Tina this is a brilliant recipe. Best Salisbury Steak ever!

I made this a few months back but forgot to comment. Doing some other comments and thought I would post on here as well.
This was delicious, made to good. I gave some to my sister and NO JOKE she calls once a week wanting me to make it for her. (She can't cook at all) Which of course I do, being a good sister and all; can't deprive her for GREAT food! Lucky for her my husband and kids loved it as well.
I also made the hoe cake with it, that was a first as well. Amazing, I make it all time now.
Thanks!

I'm new to your blog but wanted to say thanks for this recipe! I tried it out tonight and everyone loved it:) I didn't have an cornstarch or bread crumbs but I used the egg and a few bread crumbs from a piece of toast. I didn't put it in the crockpot, just simmered on the stove and served it with mashed potatoes and broccoli. Thanks again!

I am so glad you liked the salsibury steak recipe. You can use saltine crackers in place of bread crumbs. I have done that a time or two and it doesn't change a thing.

My nephew's favorite is salisbury steak and he asks his Mom for it for his birthday dinner every year. She buys the frozen dinners for him (ick), so maybe I can talk her into letting me do this for him. His birthday is in November ...I'll let you know how it goes!

I love this recipe! I wanted to tell you that I used a jar of Aunt Nellie's Holland-style whole onions in a jar (drained) in place of your small onion and my husband said that the onions made the dish! I did everything on the stove top and then baked at 350. I have been married for 28 years and had never made Salsbury Steak before. Thanks for adding a great recipe to my menu!

My grandmother used to make Hoe Cakes but she would mix up basically biscuit dough and then flatten like a pancake and fry in a cast iron skillet. She served them with syrup, they were awesome. I will have to try this recipe.

I love this and so does my family, however I do not use the crockpot.I do everything as listed except I pit it in the oven for about 30 mins at 325 and I serve it over mashed potatoes.

I made this for dinner yesterday and it was a hit with the whole family (which can be challenging at times)!!! Thank you for all the great recipes you share and for the Monthly Menu ideas. I have the Ranch House Chicken in the crockpot today and can't wait to try it tonight. :)

Ahh! Where has this recipe been all my life?! I've always loved Salisbury steak but always had the frozen kind.

You can always mince or finely chop the mushrooms and add them that way your picky eaters don't notice them. I don't like them myself because of the texture but I will eat them this way.
