Buttermilk Peach Ice Cream

Buttermilk Peach Ice Cream with fresh macerated peaches, heavy cream, buttermilk and vanilla.
HOT HOT HOT!!!! there's just no other way to describe a Texas summer day.  Too hot to turn on the oven, but not to hot to turn on the ice cream maker.  Just the sound of Homemade Peach Ice Cream with all that fresh cream and fresh fruit it just doesn't get any better than that.

Today's recipe is not my own, but it is from a fellow Texan.  Well I say she is a fellow Texan, I know one thing she is a Texas Girl at heart. She currently resides in New York and longs for the taste of good old Southern Food.

She calls herself the Homesick Texan who grew up on Tex-Mex, BBQ and chicken fried steak. oh my a girl after my own ♥ heart ♥.  The Homesick Texan has spent her time scouring the city of New York for the flavors of home.

She has an awesome blog and does a wonderful job of recreating all those wonderful Texas dishes we all love.  If you don’t already know about her wonderful site take a stroll on over and meet "The Homesick Texan" You are sure to take a liking to her food. Now onto the Ice Cream.

The Peach Ice Cream was a huge hit at our house. It was so creamy and yummy it tasted as if I were eating a fresh peach with cream. There ain’t nothing like a good old Texas Peach. Just the site of this recipe had me drooling on my keyboard.

What I love most about this recipe is how simple and straight to the point it was. No funny business or complicated ingredients to prepare just all the basics for a creamy dreamy treat. I did make a few adjustments to the recipe.

On the directions it states to follow the manufacturer directions for freezing the ice cream. Well that requires adding more regular milk up to the fill line which took away the sweetness in the ice cream.

I adjusted the amount of sugar, added one can of sweetened condensed milk and increased the buttermilk a bit. I think the flavor of the buttermilk really compliments the ice cream. It sure does hit the spot on a HOT SUMMER DAY!!! Go on and make it, you know you want to......

Here's my kiddos preparing the ice cream. They always love helping in the kitchen especially if it's ice cream.

Homemade Buttermilk Peach Ice Cream

2 - cups heavy cream
1 1/2 - 2 cups buttermilk
2 - pounds (about 6) fresh peaches, peeled and sliced or 2 cups peaches, frozen
3/4 - cup sugar
1 - 14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk
1/2 - teaspoon cinnamon
1 - teaspoon vanilla
2 - tablespoons of lemon juice

Toss peeled and sliced peaches with sugar, lemon juice and cinnamon. Cover, refrigerate and let macerate at least for a couple of hours, preferably overnight or all day.

Puree 1 1/2 cups of the peaches (save the rest for mixing in after you make your ice cream), and then mix puree with cream, buttermilk, sweetened condensed milk and vanilla.

Freeze according to your ice-cream maker’s instructions. I used a 4 quart ice cream maker.

Cook's Notes: To peel the peaches, I place them into a pot of boiling water for 30 seconds, and then transfer them to a bowl filled with ice water to halt the cooking. The skin should rub right off after blanching. If you use canned, you also might want to use less sugar if they were canned in syrup.

Macerate: is to soak fruit or other food in liquid in order to soften and flavor it with the liquid.

Drove through the hill country this weekend and there was nary a corner that didn't have someone selling fresh peaches on it. Wish I liked them!

Are there multiple peach orchards in Fredericksburg or is it just one lucky farm selling the heck out of their peaches. I should Google that.

Yum! I wouldn't have thought to use buttermilk in ice cream, but I bet it gives it even more richness. Great recipe!
