"Old Fashioned Favorite" Paula's 5 Layer Bars + July's Dinner Menu

I want to celebrate Old Fashioned Favorites! You know all those comfort foods we love to eat. It might be a dish or favorite sweet treat that you remember your mother making for you as a child. Maybe you still make a lot of these treats or dishes, I know I do.

There's just something about Old Fashioned Cooking that I love, I think it is the simplicity of it all. I'm going to be posting some recipes that take us back to those days. The first recipe is for 5 Layer Cookie Bar aka Magic Cookie Bars.

This is such an old fashioned favorite treat! Did you know that the 5 layer cookie bar is the most popular recipe in Eagle Brand history, this easy one-pan treat debuted in the 1960's. Its hard to believe 40 years later it is still a favorite among many. I know it is definitely a favorite in our house.

I usually make these around Christmas time as one of my many treats that I add to my holiday cookie trays. The other day I was watching Paula's Best Dishes and she made these wonderful little bars on her show. They really brought me back to old times. I couldn't help it, I had everything to make them so I had to throw some together.

Paula really got me craving these little buggers. Nothing is better than chocolate and nuts mixed together with coconut, graham crackers and sweetened condensed milk, I mean how can you go wrong with all those ingredients. Why don't you whip up a old time favorite in your house, I bet your family will be glad you did.

These are the ingredients you will need:
Graham Cracker Crumbs, Sweetened Condensed Milk, Chocolate Chips, Butterscotch Chips, Butter, Coconut and Pecans.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Combine graham cracker crumbs and melted butter. Press into bottom of a 9-by-13-by-2 inch baking dish.

Sprinkle remaining ingredients of mix over crumb mixture.

Pour sweetened condensed milk over the layers.

Bake for 30 minutes. Allow to cool and cut into bars.

How do you think these would taste without the coconut? I'm not a fan of coconut.

Justin, I know what you mean. This is my kind of dessert as well.

Karla, Hmm I am not sure on that one. I have never made them without coconut. It never hurts to try. I mean it is still chocolate, butterscotch and nuts. I might increase the pecans a bit. LMK if you try you hand at it and what the results are.

My kids love magic cookie bars, but we've never tried Paula's version. We'll have taste test them. :)

Tina,

I saw this and went immediately into my cupboard and freezer to see if I had all the ingredients. LOL! It's sitting on my counter as we speak too. I've made this many times too and it's perfect girl food!

When I was a newlywed and COULD NOT COOK, this was the FIRST recipe I made that hubs and guests actually said, "Mmmm, good." after eating it. (I took it to every potluck and social gathering I attended for YEARS to come!)
