Chocolate Sandwich Cookies (Homemade Oreo's)

Rich chocolate sandwich cookies with creamy vanilla filling stuffed in the middle. These semi-homemade cookies are super easy to make using a devils food cake mix.
These semi-homemade cream filled cookies are sooooooooo good. Rich chocolate sandwich cookies with creamy vanilla filling stuffed in the middle. I found this recipe on Tangled and True  a couple weeks back.

The cookie part of this recipe starts with a devils food cake mix and the filling can be made with or without cream cheese. A true chocolate sandwich cookie does not have cream cheese in it but both filling recipes are delicious.

I've included the recipe for both fillings so you can decide which is your favorite. The filling recipe also makes quite a bit so I normally just freeze the leftover filling. These cookies are so delicious and so addicting.

The chocolate cookie part is crisp just like a cookie should be. Some folks say this is a Whoopie pie, but Whoopie pies have more of a soft cake like outside and these are definitely a crisp cookie. I hope you enjoy this treat as much as my family does.

Chocolate Cookie Recipe:
1 - package devil's food cake mix
2 - eggs
1/2 - cup canola oil or coconut oil

Vanilla Cream Filling:1/4 cup (1/2 stick) room-temperature, unsalted butter
1/4 - cup vegetable shortening
2 1/2 - cups sifted confectioners’ sugar (powdered sugar)
2 - teaspoons vanilla extract

Cream Cheese Filling:
1 - stick butter (1/2 cup)
1 - 8oz package cream cheese, softened
3-4 cups - confectioner's sugar (depending on desired consistency)
1 - tsp vanilla extract

Directions:
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Add oil and eggs to cake mix and blend together. Roll dough into balls (a little larger than a quarter).

Place on greased cookie sheet. Bake for 8 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool on sheet (until warm).

Remove cookies from baking sheet and place on cooling rack.

(Cream Cheese Filling)  To prepare the filling, cream butter and add cream cheese. Mix well. Add vanilla extract and confectioner's sugar. Mix slowly until you reach your desired consistency.

(Vanilla Filling)  Cream butter and shortening together. Add vanilla extract and confectioner's sugar slowly until you reach your desired consistency.

To assemble the cookies, in a pastry bag with a 1/2 inch, round tip (you can always use a zip lock bag with a round tip or just use a butter knife) add about a tablespoon of filling into the center of one cookie.

Place another cookie similar in size on top of the filling. Lightly press, to work the filling evenly to the outsides of the cookie. Continue this process until all the cookies have been sandwiched with cream.

I have a similar recipe for these, but yours look SO much prettier! I laughed when I read the whoopie pie comment too, since on a recent trip to Amish country I decided to buy some authentic whoopie pies and they were almost identical.

These look terrific! Just this of all the flavor variations you could make with this one cookie recipe just by switching out the flavor of cake and flavoring the filling!!!

Mmmmm-I need one of these NOW!! Delicious.
Tina, there's nothing in this world that makes me smile like a few (HA!) Oreo cookies and a tall glass of milk. Even though I can't always get to the store, there's nothing that's going to keep from enjoying that delicious flavor again. Thanks neighbor.

The filling reminds me of a whoopie pie. The cookies do a little bit but i think they are more cake like for a whoopie pie, these are more cripy like a cookie. I dont care what you call them they are so darn good LOL.

My daughter and I made these together yesterday. They were super yummy and a good recipe for us to make together. We colored our icing pink. If you don't mind I might post a link to your site on my blog with pics of her making the cookies. Thanks for the recipe!!

Looks good.. now oreo makes Cakesters...those that you make could also be comapred to whoopie pies...what is good is giving the cream a minty flavor.. and you could experiment with different flavors with the sandwhich and filling.

These look great! You can find a more authentic, homemade recipe for Oreo cookies at Smitten Kitchen's website. I've made them before, but my pictures are not as great as hers. They taste even better than the store-bought variety, but the filling tastes exactly like it. Here is the link: http://smittenkitchen.com/2007/05/my-kingdom-for-a-glass-of-milk/

WOW Do those ever look good! I've copied the recipe to make them for our academy kids in our Christian school. Thanks for stopping by my blog the other day, I hope the coney dogs turned out well for you!

I made these today for the super bowl and they were amazing! I loved the soft texture of the cookie combined with the yummy frosting. I chose to make the cream cheese icing to give it a different taste. Loved them. Will definitely make again!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

I had a recipe for these in a cookbook my mom made and typed out for me, and everything was going terribly wrong!

I'm attempting to make cookies for my fiance for the first time ever, as his valentines day gift, and all I was getting was a running disaster!

I changed one of the ingredients my Mom suggested to yours, and suddenly everything is coming together!

You saved my valentines day, and saved me from another round of tears!
I just found your blog while searching for homemade oreo cookies. This may be my favoritest blog ever! Great place to find great recipes and very cute too! I am following you- glad I found Mommy's Kitchen!

This is a great recipe! Instead of making the filling, I used vanilla ice cream and made ice cream sandwiches. It was a hit and a great summer treat! Thanks for the recipe.
