New Year's Day Recipes in Texas

New Years day is right around the corner, so it's time to start cooking up some good luck food!!!  In Texas (and many other southern states) black-eyed peas have long been thought to bring forth good luck if eaten on New Year's.

No one knows for certain where the tradition came from, though it's thought to date back to the Civil War. Black eyed peas are for good luck and often served with greens or cabbage which represent money and prosperity.

With New Years day quickly approaching I thought I would share some of my family's favorite dishes for the New Years Day Meal. Whether or not these dishes bring good luck and wealth in the coming year, it's still a fun and delicious tradition in our family. I hope you find at least one of my New Years dishes to enjoy with your family.

Easy Crock Pot Pork Roast :  I like to serve either ham slices or a pork roast on New Years Day along with black eyed peas or Hoppin John, cabbage, fried apples and cornbread or biscuit bread.

Honey Baked Ham is a spiral cut, honey crusted - glazed ham perfect for any holiday or special occasion.

Slow Cooker Black Eyed Peas: Slow Cooker Black Eyed Peas are true southern comfort food! These peas are loaded with diced ham, onions, stewed tomatoes, spices and chicken broth, and slow cooked to perfection with a ham bone.

Southern Hoppin John:  Hoppin' John is a classic southern dish made with black-eyed peas, rice and flavored with ham or bacon.

Beans and ham are a traditional pairing in the south, so a leftover ham bone from your holiday spiral cut ham is perfect for making this Slow Cooker Black Eyed Pea & Ham Soup!

Texas Caviar: Texas Caviar is a black eyed pea salad lightly seasoned with a vinaigrette dressing and often eaten with tortilla chips.

Pan Fried Cabbage: Fresh cabbage lightly stir fried and seasoned with bacon, onion, salt, pepper and a bit of chicken bouillon.

This Golden Southern Skillet Cornbread is crispy, buttery, made with buttermilk and no sugar. This classic cornbread is simple to make and bakes up golden brown.

Mexican Cornbread: My mother in laws Mexican cornbread is filled with cheddar cheese, jalapenos and creamed corn.

Pepper Jack (Jalapeno) CornbreadJalapeños and Velveeta pepper jack cheese brings the heat in this sweet and spicy shortcut  cornbread.

Hot Water Cornbread: Hot water cornbread is a mixture of cornmeal, flour and boiling water mixed together, shaped into small patties and cooked in a skillet with hot oil. Hot water cornbread is delicious served with beans and greens.

Southern Biscuit Bread: This biscuit bread is nice and crispy on the outside and cotton soft on the inside.

Deviled Eggs are an old stand by appetizer that make an appearance on just about every holiday in the south.

Skillet Fried Cinnamon Apples: Southern Fried Apples are a simple, down home side dish that pair perfectly with any country meal.

Don't forget DESSERT! I like to make a traditional southern dessert to finish off our New Years Day Meal. Sometimes it's banana pudding, buttermilk pie, a caramel cake, a cobbler or just a simple pound cake.

Grandma's Banana Pudding: is a scratch stove - top vanilla pudding poured over vanilla wafers, fresh cut bananas and topped with additional crushed wafers.

This is my absolute favorite peach cobbler recipe!!!! Fluffy on the inside with a delicious crispy topping!!!! The secret ingredient to this crispy topping is sugar and boiling water!

This fluffy peach cobbler uses 🍑 fresh in -season peaches and buttermilk, which makes the topping sooooooo fluffy and perfect to sop up all that peach filling.

Southern Buttermilk Pie: is an old fashioned southern style custard pie with a lightly brown, crispy-sugary topping.

This moist, buttery, scratch, yellow cake is covered with a rich, satin caramel frosting that runs down the sides. This single layer Southern Caramel Cake is perfect if you just need a little something sweet.

This simple vanilla pound cake comes together quickly and easily and only calls for 6 ingredients. Delicious alone or topped with fresh berries.
