Baked Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

I'm sure that I am the only one that hasn't heard of Baked Grilled Cheese Sandwiches. I have always made my grilled cheese sandwiches on the stove, which is fine if you are just making one or two sandwich, but if you have a big group like mine standing there making more then ones starts to become a chore.

When we go out to eat I can always bet that my son is going to order Grilled Cheese Sandwich and French Fries from the kids menu. Carson is a creature of habit and hardly every changes his mind. I have to admit some of the Restaurants have the best grilled cheese sandwiches, I always wonder to myself how come mine aren't as crispy and good as the ones we get when we eat out. I know its just a grilled cheese sandwich but some of them are super delicious that I almost want to order a kids meal for myself.

I came across the recipe for Baked Grilled Cheese Sandwiches online one day. It was a light bulb moment. Kind of like the day i figured out you can cook bacon in the oven instead of sitting there frying it up on the stove trying to get all the little ends just as crispy as the rest of the bacon.  The sandwiches came out so golden brown and crispy on the outside just like the way they are served in the restaurants and the kids loved them!!!

Cooks Note:
I used Sharp Cheddar Cheese Slices and used real butter instead of margarine. Next time I'm going to use Velveeta Cheese Slices and add some sliced ham on a few of the sandwiches. My husband loves the Velveeta slices.

Good morning Tina. Just read your Kings banana and peanut butter recipe. I loved Elvis. I have this cookbook called Graceland's TAble. It has all of his favorite recipes in it. It was put together by 400 Elvis fans worldwide. To be honest, I haven't really gone through the book, never seems to be enough time, but I know it's there and I will read it someday.
Thanks for the post girlfriend.

What a simple but great idea. I am soooo looking forward to when my 4 yo will eat a grilled cheese sandwich. The only s'wich he eats is pb&j.
Hi Tina, thanks for stopping by the site. Yes, I actually fashioned my copitas after sopes. They do make a great appetizer because they're so versatile. How're you doing kiddo? How's the weather up there? Is it hot enough for you? My son and daughter in law live in Dallas. They had temps of 105 two days ago.
Talk to you again soon.

Hi Teresa I love Sopes I had never had them so when i first tried them I was hooked. I also love Chorizo as well. I could definitly live in your house and eat all those yummy meals.

Stephanie it never occurred to me to bake them in the oven either. LOL I am telling you if you use real butter and bake them they are so cripy and good. Isnt it funny how we never think of the most simple things.

And to the other Stephanie my son is a PB & J man himself but his appetite is evolving. LOL. Theres hope.

This is the first time I've heard of baked Grilled Cheese Sandwiches, too!! We must have been living under the same rock. LOL. I can't wait to give this method a try b/c I LOVE grilled cheese!

I have a little tip for everyone, too. Instead of buttering the outside of your bread for grilled sandwiches with butter or margarine, use mayonaise instead. It makes the bread crispier and brown more evenly. Please note that the the mayo will give a slightly salty taste, but so does salted butter! :)

I was just telling a coworker today that I was hungry for a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup! I have never thought about making them in the oven either, but I sure will now!
And I sure never heard of using mayo instead of butter!I'll try that too.

I have never thought of making my grilled cheese sandwiches in the oven. I can't wait to try it. I did learn a good trick which is to use a small amount of mayonnaise in place of the butter when grilling in a pan. I've done this several times and they come out brown and crispy not soggy. I also use Muenster cheese which is mild in flavor and very buttery! Yum!
