Dried Orange - Cranberry Stove Top Potpourri

Fill your home with the aroma of citrus and warm spices with this homemade stove-top potpourri.  Stove top potpourri makes your home feel and smell so cozy and inviting.
Homemade Stove top Potpourri is one of my favorite ways to scent my home. The combination of dried fruits, cinnamon sticks, spices and rosemary, fill the whole house with an amazing  aroma. I like to use dried fruit to make this potpourri and I normally make it around the holidays to give to family and friends.

Stove top potpourri is an inexpensive gift and a wonderful way to use up fruits that might be past their prime. This potpourri is one of my favorite scents! I love the combination of the oranges, cranberries and cinnamon sticks. If you have leftover cranberries for Christmas and you aren't sure what to do with them this stove top potpourri is perfect.

To use this potpourri simply add one bag to a sauce pan and fill with 4-6 cups of water and turn the heat to low. Simmer the potpourri for several hours, adding more water as needed. Refrigerate pot and reuse the next day, adding more water. A mini crock pot can also be used in place of a sauce pan.

How to Dry the Oranges & Cranberries

To dry the fruit, slice the oranges to about 1/4 inch thick. Once the oranges are sliced place them on a baking sheet that has been lined with parchment paper. Place the pan in a 200 degree oven for 5-7 hours (turning the orange slices every hour). The drying process depends on how thick the oranges are sliced, so the time can vary. The oranges are done when they start to take on a light brown color.

Spread the cranberries on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake the cranberries at 200 degrees until dried about (5-7 hours).  Once the cranberries and oranges are dried, set the baking sheet on a counter until the fruit it fully dehydrated (this can take a couple days).

Once the fruit is completely dry add the fruit to clear cellophane gift bags along with the sprigs of rosemary, cinnamon sticks and spices. Secure the gift bags with ribbon or twine and attach a printable gift tag. Now they're ready for gift giving.

Since this potpourri contains fruit, it will mold if kept in the bag too long, so it's best to make it very close to when you would like to gift it. If you can't find clear gift sacks you can also use pint size mason jars.

I made several bags over the Christmas holiday and I couldn't wait to share this recipe with you. Stove top potpourri isn't just for the holidays, so I hope you'll make up a batch soon.

Bring to a simmer over low heat. Let the mixture simmer as long as you like, adding more water as needed.

You can reuse this potpourri the next day by storing it in the fridge and adding it back to the pot with more water to simmer. Add a touch of ground cinnamon and allspice to freshen it back up.

Cook's Note: Swap out your citrus and use lemons, tangerines or grapefruit. Dried, sliced apples can also be used. Since this potpourri contains fruit, it will mold if kept in the bags too long, so it's best to make it very close to when you would like to gift it. If you are unable to find whole cloves and all spice you can substitute with ground cloves or all spice.
