This recipe is a for an old-fashioned skillet cornbread that I adapted from the back of the Martha White cornbread bag and perfect served with red beans and rice, gumbo, chili, pinto beans, soup or any southern meal. It's a trusted recipe that has been around for a long time and has never failed me. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br></div><div style="text-align: left;">The changes I made to this recipe are slight, but make a big difference. I use bacon drippings to coat my cast iron skillet instead of shortening, because that's what my Ma Maw did. Bacon drippings add a slight smoky flavor and yield a crispy outer crust. I also use buttermilk and melted butter instead of milk and oil. Buttermilk adds a tangy flavor and both the buttermilk and melted butter help keep the cornbread moist. <br><br></div><span></span><a href="https://www.mommyskitchen.net/2023/12/golden-skillet-cornbread.html#more">read article</a>Tina Butlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10515629994766421233noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8390396285139687239.post-56087482092913396472023-12-13T22:57:00.000-06:002023-12-13T22:57:21.591-06:0040+ Christmas Gifts from the Kitchen <div style="text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2Ag1re_kM-ZfzXW6GU3sdDDHQbL9eHF2oZuY4GhCW_ODCPnr7dPdJG3mWLFOO2vZ-YLmU26BDjYQ2aIOi6natnECaMemrIby-c9XBeSkhzZMgBfp7LytJVRUI2seDK2EV0bFWCdxKwn3piuBq00HSCtbQVLOI2yqj9gwgUJ1AVaDlcOcQrk4w3NGx0dw/s647/christmas%20gifts%20.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="647" data-original-width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2Ag1re_kM-ZfzXW6GU3sdDDHQbL9eHF2oZuY4GhCW_ODCPnr7dPdJG3mWLFOO2vZ-YLmU26BDjYQ2aIOi6natnECaMemrIby-c9XBeSkhzZMgBfp7LytJVRUI2seDK2EV0bFWCdxKwn3piuBq00HSCtbQVLOI2yqj9gwgUJ1AVaDlcOcQrk4w3NGx0dw/s16000/christmas%20gifts%20.png"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><i>Homemade gifts are the best gifts - perfect for teachers, a neighbor, co-workers or friends. </i><i>Christmas gifts from your kitchen are the perfect way to send out a little homemade holiday love, and they're always well received. In order to keep our budget in check, we have had to be careful with our grocery spending. One way that we have considerably saved money is by purchasing a whole brisket and grinding it ourselves versus purchasing ground beef at the grocery store. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #00000; font-family: inherit;">The cheapest - decent ground beef I have found is at Costco for $3.99 a pound for 80/20. Which is a great price, but by purchasing a whole brisket on sale for $2.49 a pound (in our area) and grinding it ourselves, we can save on the cost per pound and we know that it's a good quality of ground beef. Yes, grinding the brisket ourselves is more time-consuming, but in the long run it's cheaper, has amazing flavor and we know exactly what's in our ground beef. </span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #00000; font-family: inherit;"><br></span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white;"><span></span></span></div><a href="https://www.mommyskitchen.net/2023/08/saving-money-on-ground-beef-by-using.html#more">read article</a>Tina Butlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10515629994766421233noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8390396285139687239.post-60054797521244941042023-07-31T21:51:00.007-06:002023-09-10T07:51:19.384-06:00Homemade Shake & Bake Coating Mix<i>Shake and Bake Chicken made with a homemade Shake and Bake Mix. Using homemade laundry detergent is one way that I save money at the grocery store. I've actually been making my own <a href="https://www.mommyskitchen.net/2015/07/improved-homemade-powdered-laundry.html" target="_blank">powdered laundry detergent</a> for years, but recently changed over to this detergent due to the high price of some of the products, and I wanted something made with more natural ingredients. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Store bought laundry detergent is convenient. However, if you look at the label you will see all the harmful chemicals listed on the back which isn't good for anyone, especially people that have allergies or sensitive skin. By making your own, you know exactly what goes into your detergent. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br></div><span></span></div><a href="https://www.mommyskitchen.net/2023/07/homemade-natural-liquid-laundry.html#more">read article</a>Tina Butlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10515629994766421233noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8390396285139687239.post-4182042451449938322023-07-20T17:24:00.009-06:002023-10-11T22:40:44.950-06:00Crispy Homemade Granola Cereal <div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;">Once you try this crispy homemade crispy granola cereal, you wont go back to store-bought. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJy_mNbMjj7KHdM5K1OO2ry2eZ84C8Mf7oE0rge9CCZNLjeGNpiV2z1Sp3b21dzXbWCh22rMdEs5gW6MnX5hduqelQa7ZyCvfa7rg3vV7IE3I0Fk2WEHtdvEIJS9_K2fp8sOKcgcmaPbLF50ZuC94Sr1x8VyDvVLduCXtqkorEY2TGxoge2V98_yOhvec/s644/granola%20cereal%20top%20photo.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="644" data-original-width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJy_mNbMjj7KHdM5K1OO2ry2eZ84C8Mf7oE0rge9CCZNLjeGNpiV2z1Sp3b21dzXbWCh22rMdEs5gW6MnX5hduqelQa7ZyCvfa7rg3vV7IE3I0Fk2WEHtdvEIJS9_K2fp8sOKcgcmaPbLF50ZuC94Sr1x8VyDvVLduCXtqkorEY2TGxoge2V98_yOhvec/s16000/granola%20cereal%20top%20photo.png"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Have you seen the prices of cereal in the grocery store lately? They have gone up a lot!!!! It isn't only cereal, but the price of just about every food item has skyrocketed. Like other families, we are trying to save everywhere we can. Which means buying less and being more frugal when it comes to groceries and meals. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br></div><div style="text-align: left;">We are fortunate to have a big garden and a small fruit orchard, so we grow a lot of our own fruits, vegetables and herbs. I also can and preserve everything we grow, so it helps. We buy meat in bulk when it's on sale and stock our freezers. I also bake our own <a href="https://www.mommyskitchen.net/2023/06/amish-oatmeal-bread.html" target="_blank">bread</a>, make homemade convenience food mixes, natural <a href="https://www.mommyskitchen.net/2023/07/natural-homemade-citrus-vinegar-cleaner.html" target="_blank">citrus and herb cleaners</a> and use a new natural homemade laundry detergent (recipe coming soon). It can all be a lot of work, but it has helped me win the battle against inflation. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br></div><div style="text-align: left;">Since cereal is so expensive, I only purchase a box or two of our family's favorite and then I make my own granola cereal. I don't know why I didn't think about making homemade cereal before. I have been making <a href="https://www.mommyskitchen.net/2010/02/super-easy-homemade-granola.html" target="_blank">homemade granola</a> for years, but I never thought about turning it into a cereal until now. </div><span><br></span><span><div style="text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: georgia; font-style: italic; text-align: center;"><span></span></div></div></span></div><a href="https://www.mommyskitchen.net/2023/07/crispy-homemade-granola-cereal.html#more">read article</a>Tina Butlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10515629994766421233noreply@blogger.com0
