Cheddar Chili Dogs {Kid Friendly}

Last night was one of those nights that I just wasn't in the mood to cook. I'm sure everyone gets that way from time to time. I didn't want to eat out or pick up fast food, because we had already done that twice this month.

We try really hard to keep eating out to a minimum in our house. Not only is it a bad habit to get into, but it can also get kind of expensive. Eating out is really something that we just can't afford too often.

We still needed to eat dinner, so easy peasy was on the menu. We love chili dogs, but when it comes to chili dogs my husband prefers his chili without beans. Me on the other hand can go either way.

I told my husband it's Chili Dogs for dinner tonight, but they'll be a little different. With that being said I remembered a recipe I saw over at the Bush's Beans website for Cheddar Chili Dogs.

Instead of using regular chili this recipe utilized chili beans instead. I thought what a nice change from the regular chili dogs that I usually serve. This recipe defiantly was easy and only required a handful of ingredients.

Besides chili beans and hot dogs the recipe recommended some pretty tasty toppings to be added. Cheddar cheese, onions, chopped tomatoes and crumbled bacon.

I wasn't too sure about adding the bacon at first, but ended up loving it. The best part about this recipe is that you can dress your dogs up any way you like them. My husband and I loved all the toppings, but my kids were a bit different.

My oldest liked it just like us with the works. And my little guy Carson aka Mr. Picky Pants preferred only the hot dog and cheese. My daughter on the other hand topped hers off with everything except the onions.

My husband even liked the addition of the beans instead of just plain chili. The Cheddar Chili Dogs were a big hit in our house and very kid friendly. In the end this recipe was exactly what I was looking for easy peasy!

Cheddar Chili Dogs

1 - 16 oz can Bush's Mild Chili Beans, drained
1 - teaspoon chili powder, optional
2 - 4 tablespoons mustard
6 - all beef hot dogs
6 - hot soft dog buns
3 - slices bacon, cooked and chopped
2 - tablespoons onion, chopped
1 - small tomato, cored and chopped, optional
3/4 - cup mild cheddar cheese, shredded

Directions:
Heat beans in a medium saucepan until just heated through; stir in chili powder, if desired. Cook hot dogs according to package directions. Spread each bun with mustard (Hot dog buns can also be toasted).

Place a hot dog in each bun and top with beans. Sprinkle each with bacon, onion, cheese and tomato if desired. Serve hot.
