Simple DIY Microwave Popcorn

A simple, frugal way on how to pop popcorn in the microwave using just a paper bag, popcorn and olive oil.
One of my family's favorite snacks is popcorn. It's the perfect treat to go along with a great movie or to pop some up for the kids when they have the after school munchies. Who doesn't love popcorn? I know you can pop it on the stove the old school way, but I love the convenience of microwave popcorn.

The problem is I always forget to buy it at the grocery store and they can be a bit pricey if you ask me. Especially the ones loaded up with all that butter that we seem to love. Well, it turns out that you can make your own microwave popcorn.

All you need is a paper lunch sack, olive oil and popcorn kernels. That's it and you can enjoy your own DIY Microwave popcorn. This recipe isn't anything new and it's all over the Internet. I have actually known about this method for quite sometime now.

I just kept forgetting to purchase everything I needed. Well a couple weeks back we took the plunge and now were so glad we did. I could kick myself for not making this popcorn sooner. Everyone in my house loves this new thrifty new way of making homemade microwave popcorn.

This method is ridiculously cheap because you can purchase a 32 oz bag of popcorn for around $1.69 and a 50 count package of paper lunch sacks for $1! You can't get anymore frugal than that my friends.

Just toss the popcorn kernels and one teaspoon of olive oil. (Some of the recipes don't require this step, but I prefer it). Pour the coated kernels into a paper lunch sack.

Fold the bag over twice to close. Some people choose to add a piece of tape or staple the bag shut, but the bag stays closed just by folding it. Lay the bag on it's side inside the microwave.

Cook on high for 2 minutes or until the pops are 5 seconds apart. Remove from microwave and carefully open the bag. Pour into a bowl and season to with salt and melted butter to your taste.

Enjoy!!!

DI Microwave Popcorn

Ingredients:
1 - paper lunch sack
1/4 - cup popcorn kernels
1 - teaspoon olive oil
salt, to taste
butter, melted

Directions:
Add the popcorn, olive oil into a paper lunch sack. Add the popcorn kernels and fold the top of the bag over twice to close each fold should be 1/2 inch deep.

Place the bag on it's side into the microwave. Cook on high for 2 minutes (I use the popcorn setting on my microwave for 3.0 oz bag = 2 minutes) or until the pops are 5 seconds apart.

Remove from microwave and carefully open the bag. Pour into a bowl and season with salt and melted butter to your taste.

Tips & Warnings: I have read that the paper bag could catch fire, so this method isn't recommended, but, I haven't had any issues with popping popcorn in this manner. I do lay the paper lunch sack on it's side instead of straight up, so it's not touching the top of the microwave as well as stand close by and watch it pop the entire time.

It is dangetrous to use a staple as it is metal, I prefer to use tape

I don't use staples or tape. The staple made me nervous since it was metal and I don't even think it needs a piece of tape.

When I fold the bag down it stays closed so there is no need for either of them.

I found that if you use too much popcorn seeds it will burn. 1/4 cup on the popcorn setting works best for us. I also just add the seeds to the bag, no oil. The bag can be used again.

What wattage of Microwave is needed? I tried this with and without oil cooking 1/4 cup at 2 minutes. In both instances only about 1/3 of the corn popped and some of it was burnt.

Any ideas?

My husband showed me how to do this and we haven't bought a bag of microwave popcorn since. We don't use any oil and I fold the bag once and fold the two corners and then fold again.
