Iron Skillet Apple Crisp ~ My Girl Paula Challenge ~

This weeks recipe pick for My Girl Paula was Apple Crisp! Great recipe choice. I know it is so hard to thumb through her books and pick just one recipe. There are so many I want to make it would be so hard for me to choose. One of my families favorite desserts is Apple Crisp, so I was up for the challenge.

This recipe states to use a 8 x 8 inch baking pan, but I wanted to try something different and bake mine in a cast iron skillet. Ya'll know how I love my iron skillet, it is so much fun to throw the meal together, bake it and serve all in the same skillet. In the end it looks so pretty.
The Verdict........................ a big hit of course, I mean it's a Paula Deen Recipe how can we go wrong.

The apples were fork tender and the cinnamon oatmeal topping turned out so crispy. This Apple Crisp was perfect topped with Vanilla Ice Cream. Look how pretty it turned out using the iron skillet. My husband is the really big apple crisp fan and he gave it a thumbs up.
If you are a Paula Deen fan just like me, and would like to join the fun click on the My Girl Paula Graphic on the right of my sidebar for more information. It is all about Our Girl Paula Deen and cooking up her wonderful recipes. Thank you Michelle at Alwayz Bakin for choosing this week's Recipe Challenge.
I used Granny Smith Apples

Sliced apples with lemon and water, then add to your iron skillet.

Topping mixed and added to the top. Ready to go into the oven

Right out of the oven, ummm cant wait to dig in.

Tender sweet apples with a crispy topping.

Apple Crisp

6 - large apples (2 - 1/2 lbs)
peeled, cored & sliced thinly
1/4 - cup water
juice from 1 lemon
2 - cups rolled oats
2 - cups all purpose flour
2 - cups packed brown sugar
2 - Tablespoons cinnamon
1 1/4 cups melted butter (2 1/2 sticks)
1 - large iron skillet

Preheat ove to 350 degrees. combine the apples, water, and lemon juice add to a large Iron Skillet. In a bowl, combine the oats, flour, sugar, and cinnamon. pour in the butter and stir to make a crumbly mixture. Spread the topping in an even layer over the apples and bake for 45 - 55 minutes, or until the topping is crisp and brown. You may have to cook a bit longer just watch closely.

You are right...it's hard to go wrong with a Paula Deen recipe! I think I needed to cook mine just a little longer. I loved the way the ice cream oozed into it!

To answer your questions, the apples weren't paper thin; I just baked the minimum amount of time.

This looks heavenly!

Michelle, I baked mine 55 minutes. DH likes the topping really crispy. So I thought the longer the better, I just kept a eye on it so the topping wouldn't burn.

This looks wonderful. Another great Paula dish for sure! I really need to get me one of those cast iron skillets. My mom always told me they were dirty because you could not wash them, so I have always turned my nose up at them. I need to stop being a skillet snob and buy one :)
